A History of PCA Churches(Mostly in the Chicago Area)

Although I never heard of the PCA until around 1997(05/27), my uncle had been a pastor(teaching elder) in the PCA since 1982. After leaving the OPC in 1975 as described in townoak.com/us/churches/opc, he moved to an originally independent church New Life in Christ in Fredericksburg, VA. Likely very short after moving to that church he joined the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod as a teaching elder(TE) serving out-of-bounds(since his church was independent). The RPCES merged with the PCA in 1982(so my uncle did as well).

I took a snapshot of the PCA Church Directory on 2000(04/28), so that date is referenced a few times below.

PCA churches in the Chicago Area were originally part of the Presbytery of Northern Illinois(PNI). That presbytery originally included Northern Illinois and all of the state of Wisconsin. On 2005(07/01), the Chicago Metro Presbytery(CMP) and the Wisconsin Presbytery split off from the PNI.

A. Active PCA churches

(A9) Bethel-Chicago/Portage Park(4901 W. Berenice Avenue) founded 1994(06).
Pastors have been Seesun Yoo, Joe Cristman, and Erik Oldfather. Seesun had been in the Korean Central Presbytery prior to moving to the form the multi-ethnic Bethel. That church planted a second daughter church now known as Bethel-Niles in Summer 2013(it moved to Niles in 2022 prior to that it was in Wheeling). Seesun became the pastor of Bethel-Niles when that church formed. More on Bethel's daughter churches below.

(A12) Living Hope-Chicago/Woodlawn(6414 S. Cottage Grove Avenue) founded around 2003.
It started as a second service for Bethel-Chicago/Portage Park. It then moved Chicago/Hyde Park(near Chicago/Woodlawn) at Ida Noyes Hall at the University of Chicago. At that time it was called Bethel-UChicago. In 2010 it became a mission church and was renamed Living Hope. Prior to around 2012 or 2013, the church met at Ida Noyes Hall at the University of Chicago(most of the time in a large room on the west side of the building on the main floor, a few times in a couple of other rooms in the building).

I was a member of Living Hope from 2012(09/09) until 2017(07/02)(when my membership was transferred to what is currently known as Christ PCA-Roselle - around the time 2017(08/25) when my wife and I moved from Berwyn to Arlington Heights).

(A13) Trinity-Hinsdale(201 N. Oak Street) founded fall 2004.
Around the year 2000, Steve and Molly Preston, then members of CPC-Downers had a vision for founding a church in their hometown(Hinsdale). Around earlier 2002, Ted Powers left as pastor of CPC-Downers to be on national PCA staff. At first Ted and Ann went to Faith PCA in Lemont but eventually worked with the Prestons to form Trinity. A separate group from around Hinsdale also had a similar vision around the same time, that group included at least some of the eventual first elders at Trinity, John Bone, Nathan O'Bryon, Tom Vanderveen, and Skip Heidler.

Trinity's first worship service was in fall of 2004. My wife and I started attending there in March/April 2005 and continued to do so regularly until 2012(09/09) and occasionally since then. They met first at Hinsdale Middle School(100 S. Garfield Street). Around 2007/2008 they moved to The Community House(415 W. 8th Street, Hinsdale). Around 2017/2018 they moved to there present location Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 201 N. Oak Street. The Trinity's church office is a house next-door at 427 E. Walnut Street. That house is owned by Trinity, it had formerly been owned by the Adventist Church.

I. Inactive PCA churches

(I1) Covenant PCA in Hammond, IN founded 1929. disbanded sometime later that 2019(03/27). The church's history dates back to 1929 but I believe it came to the PCA around 2005(07/01) when the Chicago Metro Presbytery(CMP) broke away from the Presbytery of Northern Illinois(PNI).
(I2) Grace-Lansing(2740 Indiana Avenue) founded 1937(11/24) as RCA to PCA 2014(10/30) left PCA 2023(02/12).
Pastor is still part of the PCA. D2 Grace Lansing Grace Church – Chicago Metro Leroy Childress, 2018-19ff. >

(I3) Christ-Downers Grove(699 Plainfield Road) founded 1993(03/16) existed until 2006. CPC-Downers met at two locations, 8300 Lemont Road in Darien prior to August of 2000 and Prairieview Elementary School starting in August 2000. Prairieview Elementary School is at 699 Plainfield Road, Downers Grove. When the church met at 8300 Lemont Road, that site housed Prairieview's predecessor school 'Center Cass School.' Center Cass School District 66. The church office was at 6912 Main Street, Suite 27, Downers Grove. Around the year 2000, they purchased property in Woodridge, we had one evening prayer gathering at an old farmhouse that was on the property. Later the property was sold and houses built on it on a new street called Carl Court.

chicagotribune.com/2004/05/12/how-to-reach-your-local-churches-and-temples says 2004(05/12) the church was meeting in a storefront at 3520 Seven Bridges Drive across Route 53 from the property they owned. For a while before the church disbanded, the members of CPC-Downers worshipped together at Naperville PCA and did some activities together hoping to relaunch CPC-Downers.

Edward Winship (Ted) Powers was the founding pastor of CPC-Downers and remained pastor there until late in the year 2000 when he became head of church planting for the National PCA. At the presbytery meeting on 2019(05/15) it was announced that Ted was retiring from the National PCA position and becoming missions pastor at Trinity PCA-Hinsdale where he and his family had attended since that churches forming(more on that below).

(I4) Tyler Creek-Lake in the Hills(1301 Pyott Road) founded around 1998.
The pastor was Robert M. Allums. He later was "A Praying Life Director" at seejesus.net.

(I5) Triumph PCA Bolingbrook founded 1999(04/29), while that church still exists, it is no longer PCA. The Chicago Metro Presbytery separated them from the PCA between 2010 and 2020 when the Presbytery's attempts to contact them went unanswered. The pastor of Triumph was Weldon H. Williams, Jr., he remained pastor there until around 2024. One of the groups he was involved with around 2024 is missionusa.com a ministry for ex-offenders. Weldon is African-American. Search for Weldon here from info on the presbytery meeting of the Metro Atlanta Presbytery when he was transferred to the Northern Illinois Presbytery.

(I6) Living Waters-Addison founded around 2000. Dissolved around 2017. More as a Filipino ministry than a regular church. The pastor was Daniel E. Arciaga. I started attending CPC-Downers in Fall 1996. At that time Danny and his family were primarily attending there. They eventually started attending College Church in Wheaton. In addition Living Waters' Filipino ministries such as AWANA, Danny also had some roles at the Presbytery including the Mission to North America(MNA) Committee of the Presbytery.

(I7) Hop-Arlington Heights(3365 N. Arlington Heights Road) founded around 2000. Dissolved around 2000.

(I8) New Community-Plainfield(506 W. Lockport Road #3) planted by NPC, pastor D. DeWayne Rush. Dewayne invited me to a presbytery meeting in Normal, IL around 2001(more on that later).

(I9) Faith Community PCA in Lemont(238 Main Street, Suite 2A Lemont IL) planted by CPC-Downers, pastor Christopher(Chris) M. Yadron. Chris spoke up for me at the presbytery meeting in Normal, IL.

(I10) Cityview PCA in Chicago existed from 2003(02/02) until ~2015. Founding pastor was Peter Kim. Chris Yadron(see B6) was Assistant Pastor by 2003(07/15). Cityview was relaunched around 2010 by pastor Dan Adamson. Dan went to Moody Bible Institute with Aaron Baker(see A2)(Dan was a sophomore when Aaron was a freshman when they met). When Cityview dissolved, Dan became a associate pastor at Covenant(A2) where Aaron is pastor. I attended Cityview on 2011(08/14), 2011(09/11), 2012(06/10), and 2012(09/30). I was considering joining there or Living Hope at the time and eventually joined Living Hope. At that time I had a daughter who lived almost exactly a mile north of Cityview and a son who lived almost exactly a mile north of Living Hope.

(I11) Nueva Esperanza(New Hope)-Wheaton(1825 College Avenue) formed 2011 existed until 2017 or later.

More in-depth info on some of the above churches

I started attending at CPC-Downers in the fall of 1996. Ted Powers shared a story from somewhere between 1993 and 1996. He said that while they were trying to invite people to CPC-Downers, they heard that Monte Larrick the news person on Moody Radio was from Bolingbrook(near Downers Grove), possibly also that he might be looking for a church. So the church contacted him to let him know about the church. Monte and Miriam Larrick started attending CPC-Downers and did so for years. Related to that, a other couple that had shows on Moody Radio and lived in Bolingbrook started attending CPC-Downers. That couple was Chris and Andrea Fabry.
