Nicollet County, Minnesota

Harkin's General Store, West Newton Township
From 1878 to the early 1990's, my father's paternal grandfather(born 1860) farmed west of Lafayette, north of New Ulm, Minnesota. The Harkin Store, at the Minnesota River dock, and the Church of St. George are about all that are left of two early communities west of the farm.

St. George, West Newton Township
My father's paternal grandfather marriage to his first wife took place at the Church of St. George, rural New Ulm, Minnesota in 1881. Regarding his cousin(born 1864) "At the age of 18 he came to this country .. and commenced work as a farm laborer in the Township of Lafayette where he continued to reside until the time of his death .. Interment was made in the city cemetery adjoining the church"

Church of St. George History "A little log building was erected in 1858. Because many of the men of the community were baptized with the name of George, St. George became the church’s patron. Soon the small church was inadequate. Thus in 1871, it was replaced with a frame building, to be replaced in 1892 with the present, larger, brick building."
